STATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS

LIFE Scholarship - $5,000/year
Available to South Carolina residents who meet two of the three following criteria:
  • Have a final high school cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on the Uniform Grading Scale; or 
  • Have an SAT score of 1,100 (ACT 24); or
  • Rank in the top 30 percent of the student's high school graduating class; and
  • Enroll as a full-time student.
Annual renewal, transfer or continuing student eligibility require the student to earn at least 30 semester hours for each year of attendance and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

Enhanced LIFE Scholarship - $7,500/year ($5,000 LIFE + $2,500 Enhancement)
Must meet renewal criteria for the LIFE Scholarship (earn an average of 30 hours each year with at least a 3.0 GPA).  Available beginning sophomore year and renewable for up to two additional years.
  • During first year in college, must complete at least 14 credit hours in math and science
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • Must be enrolled full time and in an approved math/science/health professions degree prior to the beginning of the fall term (visit http://www.che.sc.gov/ for eligible programs).
HOPE Scholarship - $2,800
Awarded to entering South Carolina resident freshmen who have a final high school cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on the Uniform Grading Scale.  
The HOPE Scholarship is not renewable, but students who earn a 3.0 GPA and 30 hours in the freshman year are eligible to receive the LIFE Scholarship in the second year.

Palmetto Fellows Scholarship - $6,700/year for freshmen, $7,500/year for upperclassmen
The recipients are selected by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education.  To be considered for the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship, a student must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a South Carolina resident; and 
  • Have a minimum SAT of 1,200 (or ACT of 27); and
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 3.50; and
  • Rank in the top 6 percent of the student's high school graduating class at the end of either the sophomore or the junior year; and
  • Submit an application by the December deadline of the senior year (visit http://www.che.sc.gov/ for deadline date each year).  Applications are available from your high school.
Enhanced Palmetto Fellows Scholarship - $10,000/year ($7,500+$2,500)
Must meet renewal criteria for the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship (earn 30 hours each year with at least a 3.0 GPA).  Available beginning sophomore year and renewable for up to two additional years.
  • During first year in college, must complete at least 14 credit hours in math and science
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen

Teaching Fellows Program - $5,700 for tuition and board and $300 for summer enrichment
Provides fellowships for high school seniors who have exhibited high academic achievement, a history of service to their schools and communities, and a desire to teach in South Carolina schools.  A fellow agrees to teach in South Carolina one year for every year he/she received the fellowship. South Carolina Need-Based Grant (SCNBG) - amount varies
A state-funded grant program open to South Carolina residents who are first-time undergraduate students with demonstrated need.  They must be enrolled at least half time in a degree-granting program and maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average.  Students should apply for financial assistance by March 1 to be considered for the next academic year.

SC National Guard College Assistance Program (CAP) - max $4,500/year
Visit http://www.che.sc.gov/ for complete details regarding this program. To qualify, an applicant must be in good standing with the active National Guard at the beginning of each academic year and remain a member in good standing with the active National Guard throughout the entire academic year for which benefits are payable.  Applicant must have valid tuition and fee expenses from an eligible institution and maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by the institution.  Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident who meets the definition of an eligible non-citizen under State Residency statutes.  Applicant must be admitted, enrolled, and classified as a degree-seeking, full-time or part-time student at an eligible institution in South Carolina; and satisfy additional eligibility requirements as may be promulgated by the Commission.

FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMS

Federal Pell Grant - $575 - $5,645
Available almost exclusively to undergraduates; all eligible students will receive the Federal Pell Grant amount they qualify for.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) - $100 - $4,000
For undergraduates with exceptional financial need; priority is given to Federal Pell Grant recipients; funds depend on availability at school.

Federal Perkins Loan - $5,500 max for undergraduates; $8,000 max for graduate students
Interest charged on this loan is 5 percent for both undergraduate and graduate students; payment is owed to the school that made the loan.  Funding for this program is extremely limited.

Federal Direct Subsidized Student Loan - $3,500 - $5,500
U.S. Department of Education pays interest while borrower is in school and during grace and deferment periods; you must be at least a half-time student and have financial need.

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Student Loan - $2,00 - $20,500
Borrower is responsible for interest during the life of the loan; you must be at least a half-time student; financial need is not a requirement.

Federal Direct Parent Loan (PLUS)
Available to parents of dependent undergraduate students enrolled at least half time.  Financial need is not a requirement.  PLUS loans are not subsidized, borrower is responsible for interest during the life of the loan.  Maximum amount is cost of attendance minus any other financial aid the student receives; minimums may apply.

Federal Work-Study (FWS) - limited by financial need
For undergraduate and graduate students; jobs can be on campus or off campus; students are paid at least federal minimum wage.  Work-study allows undergraduate and graduate students to work part time to help pay for their education.  Work-study earnings are paid directly to the student twice a month.  The funds can be used at the student's discretion to help with living costs, transportation, etc.
