- Prepare for the SAT and ACT in class. If you would like to review on your own, many SAT/ACT review materials are available at the public library and commercially.
- Your focus this year should be on your GRADES. Junior year grades are very important to admissions committees.
- Be involved in a wide range of activities to build experience and character.
October
- Take the PSAT (Preliminary SAT). This test puts you in the running for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship.
- Do some soul-searching about college. Consider college size, proximity to home, Christian/non-Christian, cost, and whether it is realistic for you to attend based on your school record.
November
- Keep studying! See your teachers for extra help if you need it.
- Plan to visit college campuses whenever you are in the area.
December
- Look for PSAT results in mid-December.
- Memorize your social security number; you will need it on many forms and in college.
January
- Course selection begins for your senior year. Plan your courses wisely, and seek advise from teachers, parents, and the counselor.
- Begin reviewing for the SAT.
- Consider what you can do to improve your grade point average.
February
- College research is important now. Begin a tentative list of colleges in which you might be interested. Visit the guidance resource library to view catalogs, brochures, books, and videos.
- Check out internet college research sites (http://www.collegeboard.org/).
- Consider taking the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). This free test provides career and academic information about you, with no obligation to join the military.
- Begin thinking about classes you want to take in your senior year.
March
- Determine registration dates for the SAT and ACT. Forms are available in guidance, or register for SAT at http://www.collegeboard.org/ and ACT at http://www.act.org/.
- Attend college fairs and visit campuses.
April
- Continue to focus on your grades.
- Register for the SAT and ACT if you haven't already.
May
- SAT is administered this month: you should take it.
- Before leaving for the summer you should have a list of colleges you would like to visit over the summer.
June
- SAT and ACT are administered this month.
- Call colleges to schedule your visit.
- Do something this summer: participate in summer enrichment programs, volunteer, work, study, travel.
- Begin to research scholarships (http://www.fastweb.com/).
- Consider your SAT and ACT test scores. Do you want to retake them in the fall?
